The Florida/Caribbean AIDS Education and Training Center’s (AETC’s) mission is to ensure that physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dentists, pharmacists, and other health professionals receive state-of-the-art information, training, and consultation on the prevention and treatments of HIV and AIDS.

One of several AETCs funded nationwide, the Florida/Caribbean program has an annual grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration through the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act. Following an assessment of local needs, AETC faculty design training to improve the quality of HIV care in the clinical setting.

The AETC serves a region that includes Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Education is provided through workshops, hands-on supervised clinical training, case conferences, and specialty conferences. Medical faculty also provide timely case consultation in person, via telephone, or by e-mail.

The Florida/Caribbean AETC recognizes that the HIV/AIDS epidemic is growing among traditionally underserved and hard-to-reach populations. Special emphasis is placed on training Ryan White Care Act funded providers. The program emphasizes reaching health care providers serving minority and poor populations that now are affected disproportionately by HIV. These include rural hospitals, community and migrant health centers, public health clinics, AIDS service organizations, correctional facilities, and other nonprofit organizations.

The Florida/Caribbean AETC central office operates within the USF Center for HIV Education and Research at the University of South Florida’s (USF’s) Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute, in collaboration with the USF College of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Internal Medicine, the Department of Pediatrics, and the USF College of Public Health.

Michael Knox, Ph.D., a Distinguished University Professor at USF, is Director of the Florida/Caribbean AETC. USF works closely with the University of Puerto Rico, the University of Florida, the University of Miami, Florida A&M University, and the University of the Virgin Islands to develop AETC programs. A network of training partners provide faculty and clinical training sites throughout the region.
